A poker table consists of individuals that have human aspects. Here is where the psychology in poker comes into a play. By learning the actions of an opponent, you can obtain the ability of reading them and creating inferences on what they will do next. If you master this ability, you will soon be learning how to beat them and how to use their every move to an advantage. But for starters, it is best to learn who your players are by knowing the opponent types that could be present in a poker site. There are four opponent styles that you should be aware of. If you spotted each of them, you can make this as an opportunity for you to win the game.
An opponent who simply calls on every bet and rarely raises or bet is called a Loose-passive player. This type of opponent can be hard to read since it may be weak cards he is playing. If you find a table full of them, you can play your weak cards since you won’t be expecting raises and bets on before the flop.
The opposite of the Loose-passive is the Loose-aggressive. This player can be an annoying opponent. He keeps on raising and producing bets even when he has weak cards. His cards can be anything, weak or strong. The fact that he is too bold to raise and bet can be dangerous. However, use this person’s actions to an advantage. If you see another person calling and raising after the loose-aggressive player’s turn, study that person. If on the earlier round, that person wasn’t by a chance a loose-aggressive, you will know that this person has a high possibility of holding strong cards. If the table is full of them, be warned. A large pot is at stake but you could be contributing to that, so play strong cards only.
Tight-passive poker players are those who are scared to give out their money. If they have to lose, at least they have to lose only a bit of their chips. These people playing safe by only calling when they have strong hands and folding if the cards they have, in their opinion, aren’t going to win them any. If you find players like this, be a bit aggressive. They might end up folding. If there are too many of them on your game, you will be winning only a small pot if you want them to go on to the showdown.
Tight-aggressive players tend to become the most difficult opponents to play with especially if you are a newbie. They are too careful with their money but are also smart to bet miraculously if they have strong hands. Even if you have detected them early, you will be staking too much if you push further in competing with them. With strong cards, they will heighten up their bets and you won’t be sure if they will beat your cards since their bets could make you lose your entire chips if they win.
You need to be very sensitive in every move an opponent makes to be able to classify him. And if you have successfully identified all of them, use the information to your advantage.
